DesignsPhotographs Rémi Carreiro Photography An additional bedroom for twin brothers currently sharing a room, and space for a proper dining table where of course the clients could enjoy meals with friends and family but could also host a variety of family friendly activities ranging from game night, to puzzles, to schoolwork. doubleMint House is a two-storey rear addition and partial renovation to an existing three story semi-detached Edwardian style home in Toronto. The project also includes a fully renovated basement and a third storey walkout roof deck. &nbsp; The organization of the addition originates on the second floor in creating two bedrooms of very similar qualities with only subtle differences; a nod to the eventual occupants of the bedrooms. The room proportions and dimensions are very similar, identical windows are situated in each room, and the rooms participate equally in a narrow double height space at the end of the bedrooms. The subtlety in the differences is situated in the sculpting of the ceilings and the hue of blue paint on the exterior facing bulkhead of the double height volumes. &nbsp; The rear addition at two storeys, creates an opportunity to walk out from the third storey primary bedroom onto a roof deck. This was not part of the original brief but was welcomed by the clients as a replacement for the green space lost at grade by the increased footprint of the addition. A thick guard was developed to allow for a double height volume in the twin bedrooms below, to provide privacy for adjacent neighbours and the clients, and provides a space for a green roof. The clients adore this space for book reading, coffee drinking, evening chatting and after dinner wine sipping. The ground floor was extended to align with the attached dwelling. It includes the existing kitchen with the extension housing a proper dining and living space.&nbsp; A long millwork piece on the west side and a composition of white oak panels and blackened steel on the west side are interior liners connecting the old and new footprint. The millwork piece displays a large collection of books, an ever-growing collection of vinyl records and record player, and hides an assortment of dining wares behind cabinet doors. The counter space can be used for display or as a serving space. The white oak panels camouflage two doors: one to the basement stairs and the other to a new powder room. The blackened steel lines a large niche for a wood burning stove reused from the existing house and a two-sided set of steel shelves to store firewood. The north face is an expansive window and glass sliding door inviting indirect light to enter the space as well as producing opportunities for cross ventilation. The house is defined by an interesting set of interactions between old and new that are neatly dovetailed, and by finding opportunities to be inventive spatially to create distinctive moments. A small open to below on the third floor aligns with an existing skylight bringing light into the corridor of the now deeper floor plate below. Interesting reflections are created by its composition of light, glass, and mirror. The thick guard creates an outdoor space while also expanding the height of the bedrooms below. Millwork and wood panels are used to provide connectivity and overlap between old and new while slotting themselves neatly into existing millwork or details.&nbsp; &nbsp; Designs The project is a modest cottage for a family of four on a six-acre greenfield lot located in Prince Edward County. The northern third of the site is densely dotted with mature trees forming a dense canopy. The site is the result of a parceling of larger site still containing a vineyard, a crop very much part of the local economy.&nbsp; Formally the cottage expresses our fascination with drawing lines in the landscape combined with a contemporary interpretation of the barn a vernacular building type dotting the landscape in the region. &nbsp; The gabled painted steel roof inscribes a solid black line in the landscape. Its wood clad exterior walls are perforated with windows at strategic locations directly opposite one another on the north and south sides forming a conceptual dashed line in the landscape. Possible future additions such as a rear deck, a garage / workshop, a vegetable garden, a small orchard grove of trees, and or a swimming pool will contribute to the lengthening of the line. &nbsp; The line in the landscape has been positioned to accentuate the threshold between landscape types of the meadow / field and the canopy. This provides a rich experience within the space with views underneath the canopy to the north and expanded views to the south across the meadow / field. There is a connection to the landscape from every room in the house. With windows positioned directly across from one another there are several moments where the cottage serves as a frame for the landscape on the opposite side.&nbsp; The program is organized along a single loaded corridor over three storeys. The public and social spaces of the cottage are located on the ground floor.&nbsp; The ground floor has very few walls to allow for a flexible space for larger gatherings of extended family. The second floor contains the private spaces such as bedrooms with one end of the corridor opening to an open to below connecting the two stories above grade. The cottage scribes a new line in the landscape. Francesco Martire, Adrian Phiffer Civil LEA Consulting Ltd. Roost, Roost brings the landscape and its related ecologies into the foreground. The proposal alters the positioning of the existing narrative from operating on top of a landscape to operating in a landscape. The result, a significant shift away from a manicured pseudo landscape, primarily characterized by ornament, to a productive landscape - a landscape with agency - mobilizing its internal ecological engine: always moving, in a constant state of flux, an infinite collection of possibilities, an indeterminate end… always becoming. Our proposal brings into light a project of inclusion and co-habitation where the distinction between natural history and human history is collapsed into one being. The creation of bird habitat is a primary vector for the project, along with other vectors that include insects and humans. Hence, the space becomes inclusive not simply for humans but also for a multi-tiered ecological group of birds, vegetation, and insects.&nbsp; The current reading of the OAA Headquarters is that of an object, a “supremely modern” icon hovering over top of a controlled, highly manicured, representational landscape. Roost&nbsp; Roost subverts this narrative and transitions the building from the observed to the observer. Its panoramic wrap around glazing allows for full view of the environment now surrounding it. The building becomes an observatory bringing an immediacy to the new landscape and ecosystem. The proposal further extends the idea of public education and the role the OAA aspires to play in enhancing the understanding of the environment. The project’s formal expression is a thick carpet of meadow with a series of points organized within a grid on the site. The grid is derived from the building becoming a conceptual extension of the existing structure. The grid equalizes the front and the back of the building, as the points perform similarly across the site. The points of the grid are defined by either an ecological tower or by a clustering of Trembling Aspen, Populus tremuloides. The ecological towers are thin membered circular truss-like columns extending to a height of 15 metres and reaching to the height of the building. Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, is planted at their base with the structure serving as the armature for its climbing habit. The ecological towers serve as the art component. They represent the productive friction of the architectural versus the natural. They are the measure by which one can read the reconciliation of architecture with landscape, the rephrasing of the dialogue between built form and natural processes. They provide opportunities for bird habitat on their own and the armature for the ever-climbing Virginia Creeper further intensifying the density of occupation by birds. It is at once iconography and performative habitat. While their origin is architectural, their state of becoming, assist in vegetation growth and create a source of nutrients and opportunities for additional habitat for non-human species. They are ecological collectors in an organized framework creating a mechanism for understanding a complex and dynamic ecosystem. The points created by the groupings of trembling aspen are core samples of a forest, a natural fragment participating in an imposed framework. Both the ecological towers and the Aspen clusters participate as equals in the grid; however, each contributes differently to the conversation of contemporary landscape practice. One is a fundamental element within an architectural construct which becomes the incubator for ecological vectors that shift its identity. The other is a landscape configured into and organized by an architectural principle. Each one is contributing to promote a haven for various bird species along with insects and butterflies.&nbsp; The meadow, planted with a multitude of native flowering perennials and tall grasses is a neutralizing context for the grid. It is a thick layer both supporting and attracting flora and fauna with a seemingly indeterminate arrangement of possibilities in colour, texture, and habitat. It is an absorptive blanket contributing to the renewed stormwater management strategy for the site. &nbsp;It is an everchanging array of colours throughout the seasons and is highly expressive when layered with snow. It is self-propelled by its internal ecological engine, always in a state of flux never achieving stasis. Our stormwater management strategy conceptualizes the surface of the site as a sponge absorbing the majority of stormwater and reducing the amount of surface runoff. Part pervious paving in the form of gravel (driveway, parking, and entry pathway) and part meadow (vegetated areas), the site becomes an organism working in sync with the environment at large. Roost&nbsp; Roost immerses a variety of species within a robust and rich ecological territory initiated by the ambition of creating a haven for birds. DesignsPhotographs doublespace photography The project is a partial renovation of an 1880 Victorian detached single-family dwelling in the west end of Toronto.&nbsp; The primary programmatic objectives of the project were to create a functional kitchen tailored for a professional chef, containing increased storage, and a wine and spirits bar. The kitchen had to be a hub for socializing and meal preparation. A precise removal of parts of the rear volume of the ground floor made way for a more energy efficient, functional, and compelling piece to be stitched into its place.&nbsp; Two interior partition walls separated the kitchen from both the dining and living spaces located towards the front of the house. A surgical removal of sections of those walls creates continuity of the dining, living, and kitchen spaces. The upper portion of these walls were left intact preserving Victorian plaster detailing on the ceiling and cornices. The top of these new openings, the head of new windows, the top of new custom millwork, the underside of bulkheads establishes a datum at a height of 2.1 metres above the floor. The horizontal datum creates a line where the house’s history encounters its ensuing future. It establishes a threshold where Victorian ornament and craft intersect with contemporary detailing and finishes. The reorganized kitchen supports new movement patterns and dovetails with the more open ground floor, and the ambition to have an efficient kitchen layout that creates opportunities for socializing.&nbsp; A fully renovated kitchen was the focus of the renovation. An insulated concrete slab, insulated exterior walls and new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical infrastructure, were included in the proper rebuilding of an existing crawl space under the kitchen. Custom millwork redefines the kitchen’s workflow and adds additional storage space. A ribbon of windows in reconstructed ground floor exterior walls wrap around the northeast corner to fill the kitchen with natural light. A generous counter depth under the new windows creates a larger working surface and helps camouflage ductwork. A new bar is tucked neatly away behind pivoting pocket doors when not mixing cocktails for friends and family guests. The kitchen also includes an island where guests can sit and chat while culinary delights are prepared for them. The project also includes a rework of the existing foyer. The space is lined with custom millwork combining a shelf, bench, and coat closet. The top of the coat closet at 2.1 metres tall also participates in the datum. DesignsPhotographs doublespace photography The project is a full renovation of an 1890 Victorian semi-detached single-family dwelling in the west end of Toronto, Canada. The house was layered with several modifications over its one-hundred-and-thirty-year history and had most recently sustained damage due to a small fire. The interior was peeled away to the exterior load bearing masonry walls, and a reconfigured set of contemporary spaces tailored for a married couple with two active young boys was layered within this existing envelope. The interior demolition uncovered many hidden spaces and opportunities to reshape the volume and recover space within the building shell. The project intertwines historical artifacts, contemporary interpretations of the past, with contemporary living, construction, and materials. The Victorian façade and its proportions and composition of openings were maintained. New high-performance windows complete with operable units were inserted into the existing openings reusing existing stone lintels and sills and maintaining subtle brick detailing. The three existing stained-glass units were salvaged, refurbished, and installed neatly in their original positions on the street facing elevation, behind the protection of the new insulated glazed units. Afternoon sunlight shining through the stained-glass temporarily paints the new interior white walls with colour.&nbsp; The reinvented ground floor is a continuous set of layered spaces moving from entry, to living, to dining, and to the galley kitchen, ending the sequence with a large window and sliding door. This large aperture stretching across almost the entirety of the rear wall extends the interior spaces into the rear yard and floods the ground floor with brilliant morning light. The boys’ bedrooms are located on the second floor flanking a family washroom. A family room that occasionally doubles as a guest bedroom is situated at the front of the house delineated by a large sliding barn door used to modulate the space. Closed, the barn door reveals a collection of books and separates the space from the rest of the floor for movie watching, video game playing, and reading. While open, the space participates in the activities, spaces, and daylighting of the second floor. The primary bedroom and an adjoining ensuite occupies the entirety of the third floor. The attic space was removed increasing the volume of space and revealing a beautifully sculpted series of surfaces created by the intersection of the gabled main and the dormer roofs. The third and second floor are interconnected through an open to below surrounded by glazed guards.&nbsp; The floor opening brings natural light into the corridor of the second floor, an otherwise dark space. Interconnecting the three floors plus basement is a new series of staircases flanked by a sinuous set of planes. The planes are a scalar interpretation of the ornament characteristic of Victorian architecture. Indeterminacy. Zoning is passé. The grouping of like things leads to stagnation, leads to isolation, leads to banality. The ecosystem of a city is ever evolving to achieve a state of balance. It needs diversity not homogeneity, needs micro networks, not large precincts, needs friction not smoothness, and requires inclusiveness, to not breed exclusivity. Hyper-Delirious Sudbury creates an intensity to the city necessary for its rejuvenation. A strategy built for flexibility, an intensity of seams between otherwise disparate programmatic zones, and a network of diversity. It imagines the city as a place of intensity of program at the pace of a pedestrian. It imagines the city not as a broad grouping of precincts, but as an intricate fine grain of program, and a diverse set of users. Designs Photographs Scott Northsworthy The project is a 500 sq ft two story rear addition to an Edwardian style single family dwelling in mid-town Toronto. The project called for the demolition of an existing two storey late eighties addition, both spatially and energy inefficient. The clients loved their neighbourhood and their home but required a more functional space tailored to their family routines and lifestyle. Spatial fluidity is created in the home moving through thresholds of old and new. The custom-built galley kitchen, existing windows adapted into wood lined openings, make use of multi-scalar apertures from old to new. The open section continues the fluidity between floors, creating opportunities for life on the ground floor to overlap with that of the second floor. Meal preparation on the ground floor occurs concurrently with painting and other crafts on the second floor. &nbsp; The floor aperture, flanked by custom millwork dubbed The Sculptural Cabinet of Curiosities housing a breakfast eating, chess playing, homework doing, crossword completing, novel reading banquette at its base and rising through the opening, is a vertical social mixing valve for the family. It negates the conventional isolation of programs by floor, and encourages communication and interaction between family members, and guests.&nbsp; An expanse of glazing along the back facade allows for an extension of the interior space and a connection to the landscape of the rear yard. The window placement on the second floor serves as frames to specific existing tree canopy. An exterior space on the upper floor of the addition puts the user amid the treetops. It uses the sculpted line of the roof and soffit, and the guard as a frame for an ever-changing composition of sky and tree foliage. The east facing glazing fills the interior space with beautiful morning light. The treed context is a natural brise soleil filtering the sunlight during the summer months while allowing full sun access in the winter assisting to warm the black tile and its radiant floor warming beneath. The operable skylight over the second-floor opening encourages natural ventilation through the space. &nbsp;&nbsp; A few simple strategies of connectivity; one between old and new, a second between floors, and third between interior and exterior, developing unique millwork, while only adding minimal floor space has radically transformed this rear addition into an efficient yet dynamic space. The school is quite unusual as it contains two separate building footprints occupying over 35% of the lot area. With another 430 sqm dedicated to parking and services, the schoolyard is small, inefficient and banal.&nbsp; With no directly adjacent open space, making full use of the existing little space&nbsp; is imperative for the well being of&nbsp; students, and staff, and surrounding community. In addition it should be noted our school currently does not have a main entrance that is barrier free. This makes it difficult for parents with strollers or in some cases grandparents attending the school for student concerts. The main purpose is of course to supply the students and staff with an engaging outdoor space promoting the possibility for creative play. Ultimately this space is also a hub for the community and can certainly be utilized as a public amenity for the surrounding neighbourhood. A stronger community built around this space means more people using it during off times which means increased safety. &nbsp;
